Let Adam—may God not heal him of bereavement—

Weep for his murdered son Abel.

For, in punishment for the error he committed,

We have kept enduring the aftereffects of illness.

And we draw wonder from time's vicissitudes,

While some people endow misguidance as charity.

They are raven-black with sin; even if they are trusted

With your secrets, you will not lack sieves.

Time wheels round, and not a day passes us

Without further confounding what we understand.

Among the strangest oddities are tall black ones

Whose offspring are white and short.

The mighty lion has turned ascetic, and first offspring have been born

To the calves of wide-eyed wild cows: ferocious lions.

Indeed, singing girls and wine-drinking are a corrupting influence,

Since before Lamech, Cainan, and Cain.

    وَما كُسيتُم مِنَ التَقوى سَرابيلا

    As for the garments of your worldly life, they are ample;

Yet you have not been clothed in garments of piety.

Then dust met two strands of pearls in a mouth

That longs to kiss a lissome prostitute.

Nor have I found the doom of men overlooking

A lion cub in a thicket, nor an ibex kid in Ishbila.

I see self-aggrandizement among peoples has raised you

To the stars, though you are short, squat men.
