دَعِ الراحَ في راحِ الغُواةِ مُدارَةً

دَعِ الراحَ في راحِ الغُواةِ مُدارَةً

يَظُنّونَ فيها حَنوَةً وَقُرُنفُلا

يَظُنّونَ فيها حَنوَةً وَقُرُنفُلا

Leave the wine circulating in the palms of the wayward;

They fancy ḥanwa and cloves within it.

كَأَنَّ شَذاها العَسجَدِيَّ بِطَبعِهِ

كَأَنَّ شَذاها العَسجَدِيَّ بِطَبعِهِ

تَضَوَّعَ هِندِيّاً وَأودِعَ فُلفُلا

تَضَوَّعَ هِندِيّاً وَأودِعَ فُلفُلا

As though its golden fragrance, by its nature,

Wafted like Indian perfume and were infused with pepper.

تَريعُ لَها أَجنادُ إِبليسَ رَغبَةً

تَريعُ لَها أَجنادُ إِبليسَ رَغبَةً

وَتَنفُرُ جَرّاها المَلائِكُ جُفَّلا

وَتَنفُرُ جَرّاها المَلائِكُ جُفَّلا

Iblis's troops flock to it eagerly,

And because of it the angels flee in panic.

يَضِنُّ بِها لَمّا تَطَعَّمَ شُربَها

يَضِنُّ بِها لَمّا تَطَعَّمَ شُربَها

فَلَيسَ بِساخٍ أَن يُمَجَّ وَيُتفَلا

فَلَيسَ بِساخٍ أَن يُمَجَّ وَيُتفَلا

He grudges parting with it once he has savored its draught,

So he is unwilling to let it be disgorged and spat out.

غَفَلتُ وَمِن غَزوي فَقُلتُ بِخَيبَةٍ

غَفَلتُ وَمِن غَزوي فَقُلتُ بِخَيبَةٍ

وَلَم يَعدُني ريبُ الحَوادِثِ مُغفِلا

وَلَم يَعدُني ريبُ الحَوادِثِ مُغفِلا

I was heedless, and from my campaign I spoke in disappointment;

Nor did the vicissitudes of fate pass me by heedlessly.

وَلَم أَقضِ فَرضاً في مِنىً وَبِلادِها

وَلَم أَقضِ فَرضاً في مِنىً وَبِلادِها

وَكَم عاجِزٍ قَد زارَها مُتَنَفِّلا

وَكَم عاجِزٍ قَد زارَها مُتَنَفِّلا

Nor have I fulfilled an obligation in Mina and its lands,

And many a helpless man has visited it in voluntary devotion.

وَوَسَّعتُ دُنياكُم عَلى مَن سَعى لَها

وَوَسَّعتُ دُنياكُم عَلى مَن سَعى لَها

فَما أَنا آتٍ لِلمَعاشِرِ مَحفِلا

فَما أَنا آتٍ لِلمَعاشِرِ مَحفِلا

And I have made room in your world for whoever pursues it;

So I shall attend no gathering of people,

سِوى أَنَّ خَطّاً في البَسيطَةِ ضَيِّقاً

سِوى أَنَّ خَطّاً في البَسيطَةِ ضَيِّقاً

يَكونُ عَلى شَخصي يَدَ الدَهرِ مُقفَلا

يَكونُ عَلى شَخصي يَدَ الدَهرِ مُقفَلا

Except that a narrow trench in the earth

Will be sealed over my body for all time.

وَأَصمُتُ صَمتاً لا تَكَلُّمَ بَعدَهُ

وَأَصمُتُ صَمتاً لا تَكَلُّمَ بَعدَهُ

وَلا قَولَ داعٍ يا فُلانُ وَيا فُلا

وَلا قَولَ داعٍ يا فُلانُ وَيا فُلا

And I shall fall into a silence after which no speech comes,

Nor a caller's cry: 'O so-and-so, and O so-and-so!'

فَما دِرهَمي إِن مَرَّ بي مُتَلَبِّثاً

فَما دِرهَمي إِن مَرَّ بي مُتَلَبِّثاً

وَلا طَفلَ لي حَتّى تَرى الشَمسَ مُطفِلا

وَلا طَفلَ لي حَتّى تَرى الشَمسَ مُطفِلا

So my dirham, if it passes my way, will not linger,

And I shall have no child until you see the sun with offspring.

وَيَرزُقُني اللَهُ الَّذي قامَ حُكمُهُ

وَيَرزُقُني اللَهُ الَّذي قامَ حُكمُهُ

بِأَرزاقِنا في أَرضِهِ مُتَكَفِّلا

بِأَرزاقِنا في أَرضِهِ مُتَكَفِّلا

And God provides for me, whose decree stands

As guarantor of our sustenance upon His earth.
