Leave the people to draw, in their mutual rancor,

daggers; and drink whatever the rain-laden clouds pour you.

The food of the rich among men and of those without wealth

is alike once throats have swallowed it.

    فَفيمَ تُلاحي أَو عَلامَ تُشاجِرُ

    You rejoiced in a branch whose root cannot endure;

so what do you dispute about, or why do you quarrel?

If you forsake vile deeds and foul speech,

then you are an emigrant, though your home is near.

An augur turned to birds of good omen—

have you no curb of reason to restrain you?

Yet the world has shown those who love it

eyes before which other eyes fill with tears.

Whenever you do good and are then denied thanks for it,

do not grieve: surely the All-Watchful grants reward.

Even if a noble man did good only out of fear

of disgrace among people, should he be called 'wicked,'

then keep a good deed you perform free of any recompense

you hope for, or profit—as though you were a merchant.

And in earnest, misguided folk visited al-Lat,

and al-Uzza was venerated and Bajir honored.

We passed through winter, summer, and spring; yet no

winter endured, and summer's heat and Najir left us.
