    It would have been better for Adam and the people who sprang

    From his loins never to have been created in the first place.

    So did he feel—his body now crumbling remains—

    The harm his sons had seen and suffered?

    And what do you want with a dwelling you do not own,

    Where you stay briefly, then depart?

    You left it unpraised, in discontent,

    While in your heart some longing for it still clings.

    The man found, in dark and dusty earth,

    A resting place, after unrest had brought him low.

    وَالثَوبُ يَنهَجُ حَتّى الدَرعُ وَالحَلَقُ

    You are a garment for the soul, which then casts it off;

    And the garment wears out—even armor and mail-rings.

    وَالغَدرُ مِنهُنَّ في أَخلاقِهِ خُلُقُ

    The nights have worn it out as they renew themselves;

    And treachery is their habit in wearing it out.

    And people differ: their truth-teller is hated

    For his account of affairs, while the lying flatterer is rewarded.

    He whose dirhams are few turns to lying,

    And amasses wealth as long as he fabricates and invents.

    And sometimes a man reproaches his own soul

    For truthfulness, when he sees the liar's good fortune.

    وَالغَيمُ يَكدي وَداعي البَرقِ يَأتَلِقُ

    And expectations about things disappoint their holder;

    And clouds yield no rain, though beckoning lightning flashes.
