كَأَنَّكَas though you were بَعدَafter خَمسينَfifty years اِستَقَلَّتhave elapsed
لِمَولِدِكَsince your birth البِناءُthe building دَناhas drawn near لِيَهويto fall
It is as though, after fifty years have passed
since your birth, you were a building about to fall.
وَإِنَّكَand you indeed إِنif تَزَوَّجmarry بِنتَa girl of عَشرٍten years
لَأَخيبُsurely worse off صَفقَةًin bargain مِنthan شَيخٍthe old man of مَهوِMahw
And if you marry a girl of ten,
you surely make a worse bargain than the old man of Mahw.
فَأَزمِعso resolve مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world نِفاراًflight
فَإِنَّهُمُfor they لَفيare surely in لَعِبٍplay وَلَهوِand diversion
So resolve to flee the sons of this world,
for they are surely absorbed in play and diversion.
وَماand not أَناI يائِسٌdespairing مِنof أَمرِthe decree of رَبّيmy Lord
عَلىdespite ماwhat كانَhas occurred منof عَمدٍdeliberate action وَسَهوِand inadvertence
Nor do I despair of what my Lord may decree,
despite all that was done deliberately or unwittingly.
وَكَمand how many مِنof آكِلٍone who eats رِزقاًsustenance هَنيئاًpleasant
وَباشَرَand endured غَيرُهُsomeone other than him عَنَتاًhardship بِطَهوِin cooking
And many a man eats a pleasant meal,
while another has borne the hardship of cooking it.
