لَقَدindeed أَصبَحَتhas become دُنياكَyour world مِنthrough فَرطِexcess of حُبِّهاlove of it
تُريناit shows us كَثيراًmuch مِنof نَوائِبِهاits calamities نَزراas little
Indeed, your world has come, through our excessive love of it,
to make its many calamities seem few to us.
وَلَوand if ظَهَرَتbecame visible أَحداثُهاits misfortunes لَسَمِعَتَهاyou would surely hear them
تَغَيَّظُraging أَوor عايَنتَyou saw أَعيُنَهاtheir eyes خُزراnarrowed in hostility
And if its misfortunes took visible form, you would hear them
raging, or see their eyes narrowed in malice.
تُواصِلُناit keeps visiting us رَمياًwith volleys وَتوسِعُناand lavishes upon us رَذىًharm
وَتَقتُلُناand kills us خَتلاًtreacherously وَتَلحَظُناand eyes us شَزراaskance
It keeps pelting us and heaps harm upon us,
and kills us treacherously, and eyes us askance.
وَلاand no رَيبَdoubt عِندَin the judgment of اللُبِّreason فيabout أَنَّthat خَيرَهاits good
بَكيٌّscant وَإِنand even though أَمسَتhave become مَصائِبُهاits calamities غُزراabundant
And reason cannot doubt that its good
is scant, even though its calamities have grown abundant.
وَقَدand indeed جَهَّزَتit has prepared لِلعَقلِfor reason راحاًwine تَغولُهُthat destroys it
فَدَعهاso leave it وَلاand do not تَشرَبdrink طِلاءًwine from boiled grape juice وَلاnor مِزراbeer
And it has prepared for reason a wine that destroys it;
so leave it, and drink neither cooked grape-wine nor beer.
وَلَوand even if أَنَّهاthat it جَلّابَةُa bringer of العَفوِforgiveness خِلتُهاI would deem it
حَراماًforbidden فَأَنّيthen how? وَهيَwhile it تَجتَلِبُbrings الوِزراthe burden of sin
And even if it brought forgiveness, I would deem it
forbidden—how much more so when it brings the burden of sin!
إِذاwhen زارَتِit visits الشَربَthe drinkers المَراجيحَthe levelheaded هَتَّكَتit strips bare
فَلَمso it did not تَتَّرِكleave فيهِمamong them إِزاراًa loincloth وَلاnor أَزراstrength
When it visits the levelheaded drinkers, it strips them bare,
leaving them neither loincloth nor strength.
