إِنّا حَسَبنا حِساباً لَم يَصِحَّ لَنا

إِنّا حَسَبنا حِساباً لَم يَصِحَّ لَنا

قَد بانَ في كُلِّهِ التَفريطُ وَالغَلَتُ

قَد بانَ في كُلِّهِ التَفريطُ وَالغَلَتُ

Indeed, we made a reckoning that did not prove right for us;

We thought we had calculated correctly, but we were wrong

Negligence and miscalculation became clear throughout it.

It was clear in all of it - excess and negligence

وَكَثرَةُ المالِ شُغلٌ زادَ في نَصَبٍ

وَكَثرَةُ المالِ شُغلٌ زادَ في نَصَبٍ

وَقِلَّةٌ مِنهُ مَعدولٌ بِها الفَلتُ

وَقِلَّةٌ مِنهُ مَعدولٌ بِها الفَلتُ

And abundant wealth is a preoccupation that adds to weariness;

An abundance of money is a preoccupation that increases troubles

And scarcity of it bars escape.

And a lack of it allows one to slip away

هَذي الحِبالَةُ قَد ضَمَّت جَماعَتَنا

هَذي الحِبالَةُ قَد ضَمَّت جَماعَتَنا

فَهَل يَنوصُ فَتىً مِنّا فَيَنفَلِتُ

فَهَل يَنوصُ فَتىً مِنّا فَيَنفَلِتُ

This snare has gathered us all in;

This pregnancy has gathered our group

So can any young man among us slip away and escape?

So can one of us slip away and escape?

أَصبَحَت كَالقَوسِ حَنَّتها أَساوِرُها

أَصبَحَت كَالقَوسِ حَنَّتها أَساوِرُها

وَكُنتَ كَالسَهمِ أَو كَالسَيفِ يَنصَلِتُ

وَكُنتَ كَالسَهمِ أَو كَالسَيفِ يَنصَلِتُ

It became like a bow its archers bent;

It has become like a bow whose bracelets have bent it

And you were like an arrow, or like a sword being unsheathed.

And you were like an arrow or sword that flashes and slashes
