كانَت عَقيماً وَخَيرُ النُسوَةِ العُقُمُ
Indeed, the Jew's ignorance led him to divorce a woman
Who was barren—and the best of women are the barren.

What did he want—may God curse him—from a child
Who is made to face, at time's hands, what destroys and what subdues?

Recovery from sickness—these ailing souls?

Like beasts, their well-being has deceived them;
And God grants respite for a while, then takes vengeance.
