لَقَدindeed أَسِفتُI grieved وَماذاand what رَدَّrestored ليto me أَسَفيmy grief
لَمّاwhen تَفَكَّرتُI reflected فيon الأَيّامِthe days وَالقِدَمِand the ancient past
Indeed I grieved—and what has my grief restored to me?
When I reflected on the days and the ancient past.
فيin العُدمِnonexistence كُنّاwe were وَحُكمُand the decree of اللَهِGod أَوجَدَناbrought us into being
ثُمَّthen اِتَّفَقناwe agreed عَلىupon ثانٍa second مِنَof العَدَمِnonexistence
We were in nonexistence, and God's decree brought us into being.
Then we agreed upon a second nonexistence.
سِيّانِboth alike عامٌa year وَيَومٌand a day فيin ذَهابِهِماthe passing of both
كَأَنَّas though ماwhat دامَlasted ثُمَّthen اِنبَتَّwas cut off لَمdid not يَدُمِlast
A year and a day are alike in their passing.
As though what lasted, then was cut off, had never lasted.
