Indeed, a young man endures the greatest

toil among his kin and neighbors.

fleeing before an avenger burning with rage.

    humankind is fashioned from filth.

If fate has cured wasting sickness, then

it has worn me away after healing me.

No slumber sleeps upon my eyelid; nor have I

ever signaled temptation with a lute.

Reasoning has shown me that the lions of

the thickets, when troubles strike, are like a bier.

They frightened us with the planets' conjunction; yet there must be

a conjunction between each soul and death.

How many mountains of armies have toppled,

and what they were driven toward was the two stones—gold and silver!

    صِ فَقَد خِلتُ أَنَّ دَهراً مَراني

    A moment of time passed over a person;

yet I thought an age had drained me.

And a calamity befell me, targeting proud noses

with humiliation; all are tethered by a nose-peg.

People claimed that some of the righteous

were borne through the air in flight,

and walked upon the water's surface. This is falsehood!

Never, as long as day and night endure!

The two Saʿds did not walk upon the deep waters

in bygone times, nor did the two ʿUmars.

That host served me what I

loathe; and God vanquishes all rivals.

I never passed a heedless night; greed goaded me

until I became like worn-out rags.
