قَدindeed أَسرَفَwent to excess الإِنسُhumankind فيin الدَعوىclaiming بِجَهلِهِمُthrough their ignorance
حَتّىuntil اِدَّعواthey claimed أَنَّهُمthat they لِلخَلقِover creation أَربابُlords
In their ignorance, humankind has gone too far in its claims,
until they claimed to be lords over creation.

طولَthroughout الحَياةِlife وَماyet not لِلقَومِthe people have أَلبابُunderstanding
Their devotion remained bound to pleasures
throughout life, though these people have no understanding.
I steer them
لَهاthey have بَحَثِّيَat my urging تَقريبٌcantering وَإِخبابُand trotting
Swifter than horses are the hopes I steer;
at my urging, they canter and trot.
فيwithin طاقَةِthe capacity النَفسِof the soul أَنto تُعنىattend بِمَنزِلِهاto its dwelling

حَتّىuntil يُجافَis shut عَلَيهاover it لِلثَرىto the earth بابُa door
The soul has power to tend its dwelling
until earth's door is shut over it.
فَاِجعَلso make نِساءَكَyour women إِنif أُعطيتَyou are granted مَقدِرَةًpower
كَذاكَlikewise وَاِحذَرand beware فَلِلمِقدارِfor fate has أَسبابُmeans
So treat your women, if you are granted power,
likewise; and beware, for fate has its means.
وَكَمand how many خَنَتwas unchaste مِنof هَجولٍa wanton حُجِّبَتwas veiled وَوَفَتand kept faith
مِنof حُرَّةٍa freeborn woman ماnot لَهاshe has فيin العينِplain sight جِلبابُa cloak
And many a veiled wanton has been unchaste, while faith was kept
by a freeborn woman with no cloak to hide her from sight.
أَذىًharm مِنَfrom الدَهرِtime مَشفوعٌcoupled لَناfor us بِأَذىًwith harm
هَذاthis المَحَلُّabode بِماwith what تَخشاهُyou fear it مِربابُa constant haunt
Harm from time is coupled for us with further harm;
this abode is a constant haunt of what you fear.
يَزورُناvisits us الخَيرُgood غِبّاًat intervals أَوor يُجانِبُناkeeps away from us
فَهَلso is there لِماfor what يَكرَهُhates الإِنسانُhumankind إِغبابُa respite
Good visits us at intervals, or keeps away from us;
but is there any respite from what humankind hates?
وَقَدand indeed أَساءَdid wrong رِجالٌmen أَحسَنواdid good فَقُلواand so were hated
وَأَجمَلواand acted graciously فَإِذاthen behold الأَعداءُenemies أَحبابُfriends
Men who did good and were hated have indeed done wrong;
and they acted graciously—then behold, enemies are friends.

So help your brother despite the weakness you feel;
indeed, the breeze blows to benefit the spirit.
