إِذاif رَأَيتُمyou see كَريماًa noble man عِندَamong غَيرِكُمُothers than yourselves
فَأَكرِموهُthen honor him عَلىin يُسرٍprosperity وَإِنضابِand want
If you see a noble man among people other than yourselves,
When you see a noble man as a guest of others,
Then honor him in prosperity and want.
Honor him generously, do not be miserly.
فَالسَيفُfor the sword تَعرِفُknows ذاتُthe woman of الخِدرِthe curtained chamber مَوضِعَهُits place
مِنamong قَومِهاher people وَهيَthough she لَمhas not تَضرِبstruck بِقِرضابِwith a sharp sword
For the woman in the curtained chamber knows the sword's place
The sword knows its sheath even when not drawn,
Among her people, though she has never struck with a sharp sword.
As the sheath knows the sword though never used.
وَالشَرُّand evil يَنشُرُrevives بَعدَafter الخَيرِgood مَيِّتَهُits dead
كَماas أَصابَbefell عُمَيراًUmayr ماwhat جَنىcommitted ضابيDabi
And evil brings its dead to life after good,
Evil spreads its harm after good,
As what Dabi committed befell Umayr.
As what befell Umayr from his foolhardy deeds.
