If you have been endowed with intellect and wisdom,
Then turn away from the world, for you are at odds with her.
وَكَونَنand be firmly لَهاto her فيin كُلِّevery أَمرٍmatter مُخالِفاًopposed

And be firmly opposed to her in every matter,
For there is no good for you in her children, nor in her.

Yet far from it! You remain lovesick and infatuated
With a foolish woman who gives her faithful friend no sincere affection.

So if this abode is a wayfarer's lodging,
Then I shall soon reach my abiding home.

I hope for things whose attainment has not been decreed,
And I fear calamities, though the Guardian suffices against them.
وَإِنَّand indeed صَريعَone slain by الخَيلِthe horses غَيرُnot مُرَوَّعٍfrightened

On dusty ground that heeds neither drizzle nor downpour,
Nor a crosswind whose gusts scatter dust in the evening.
أَرىI see مَرَضاًa sickness بِالنَفسِin the soul لَيسَis not بِزائِلٍpassing away

I see a sickness in the soul that will not pass;
So will its Lord heal it of what it endures?
وَفيand in كُلِّevery قَلبٍheart غَدرَةٌtreachery مُستَكِنَّةٌhidden

فَلاso do not تُخدَعَنever be deceived مِنby خُلَّةٍa friendship بِتَوافيهاby its concord
And in every heart a hidden treachery lies,
So do not be deceived by a friendship's concord.
