If the season of happiness leaves me,
When the time of happiness left me
then leave me, if you wish, and do not speak obliquely.
Then slay me if you wish, and do not reprove me

I cast aside my counsel because my body had grown worn;
I ignored my advice when my body became infirm
yet how often an old waterskin's hidden contents have quenched thirst.
And how much rancour did the hidden grudge pour

Certainty has disappeared in an age
Certainty has vanished in an era
whose wisdom has brought us only conjecture.
We got from its obscurity mere guesses

So we asked a lion, "Are you a lion?"
So we said to the unsure “Are you a lion?”
He doubted, saying, "Perhaps I am—or it seems I am."
He doubted and said “Upon me or as if I were”

I have no assurance of staying put.
I am not staying with tranquility

Nor my saddle on the submissive horse

free of lingering and delay.
Free from lingering and slowing down

I yearn but I do not moan except with a love
for what is unreal, among Hinn and jinn.
Without truth, of yearning and madness

Your advice carried away my she-camel and myself
and your slaughter lie in yearning, so do not yearn.
And we roam in longing so do not groan

Poverty hosted your guest permanently
will you take Dhu'ala the wolf as a fellow guest?
So do you have any hospitality in your abodes

Wealth and beggary, sleep and sleeplessness—
Wealth, arrogance, satiety, and poverty
we have spent life in every manner.
Thus we spent life with every art

A time when its children do not get any good
unless they glimpse it in their wishes.
Unless they seek it with wishes

I knew its turmoils so I withdrew
with the tooth of an aged son of experience.
With the experience of an elderly man

And it made me need one who is unlike me
as the spearhead needs the whetstone.
As the two front teeth need the canine

I am too lowly for names and bynames.
I seldom state my lineage or nickname

then one is safe from shunning and wrongful blame.
Then avoiding and shrinking are secured

The people of pretension and embellishment

Are not for the people of sweetness and melody

mighty feats not attained through sloth:
Of great feats not reached by gradualness

one that refuses to sing in green, humming thickets.
While the warbler refused singing in the greens

and fills the proud man's nose with humiliation.
And fills the haughty one’s nose with humiliation

He strips the wolf of its fluffy fur

It complained at dawn of the chill of frosty mornings;
The she-grouses complained about the cold nights
so the midday heat lavished cotton upon it.
So the north wind made them wider with cotton

Delicately chewing in its pastures in old age

I wonder are earth’s kings enslaved
bondslaves to the pleasures of their souls?
To the soul’s cravings without any gratitude

a drowned man upon a tranquil shore.
A drowning man above a sword being sharpened

The people’s departure from me is enough of sadness
I do not choose the stay-at-home's abode.
It was not my choice, the abode of the constructed

misery had lent them the crumbled remains of dry grass.
Misfortune lent them the debris of palms
