فَلَيتَنيthen would that I ضَمَّنيenfolded me صَعيدُearth
If it proves true that I am fortunate,
If I am granted happiness,
Then would that the earth enfolded me.
I wish the earth would swallow me.
صُمتُI fasted حَياتيmy life إِلىuntil مَماتيmy death
لَعَلَّperhaps يَومَthe day الحِمامِdeath عيدُa feast day
I have fasted throughout my life, until my death;
My life's silence until my death,
Perhaps the day of death will be a feast day.
Perhaps the day of reckoning is a celebration.
وَراعَنيand frightened me لِلحِسابِconcerning the reckoning ذَكَرٌa mention
وَغَرَّنيand deceived me أَنَّهُthat it is بَعيدُfar off
And mention of the reckoning frightened me,
Remembrance of the reckoning startled me,
And its being far off deceived me.
And I was deceived that it was far away.
وَعَنand on يَمينيmy right وَعَنand on شِماليmy left
يَصحَبُنيaccompanies me حافِظٌa guardian قَعيدُseated nearby
And on my right and on my left,
On my right and on my left,
A seated guardian accompanies me.
A vigilant guardian accompanies me.
حَمامَةٌa dove فيin غُصونِbranches أَيكٍa grove
ناحَتshe lamented فَأَنشَأتُso I began أَستَعيدُI ask for repetition
A dove in the branches of a grove
A dove in the branches of a tamarisk tree
Lamented, so I began asking her to repeat it.
Cried out, so I started to plead,
وَماand not فَقِهتُI understood المَرادَthe intended meaning مِنهاfrom her
كُلُّevery فَقيهٍscholar لَهُfor him مُعيدُa repeater of lessons
And I did not understand what she meant;
And I did not understand what she intended;
Every scholar has someone to repeat the lesson.
Every expert has his own interpretation.
إِذاif رَجَوناwe hope قَضاءَfulfillment وَعدٍa promise
فَكَيفَthen how لاnot يُرهَبُbe feared الوَعيدُthe threat
If we hope for the fulfillment of a promise,
If we hope for the fulfillment of a promise,
Then how can the threat not be feared?
How can the threat not be feared?
