    If His bounty to you has not been stinted

    by your God, then let stinginess forsake your fingertips.

    فَلَيسَ بِناءٍ مِن خَلائِقِنا الخَترُ

    And we are sons of Time, which is treacherous;

    so treachery is not far removed from our nature.

    Affairs that have brought grief, if they remain unfinished, are

    speckled vipers whose truncated tails drive death onward.

    Nor was a fleeing gazelle protected by its hide—

    a lump of musk—from slaughter overtaking it.

    And your love for this abode is the foundation of rule

    for your ignorance; the outward is a veil over the inward.

    I marvel at the riders of the waves, hoping for a star,

    while the army of deaths is but a span from their souls.

    إِذا هِيَ دَبَّت فَالعِظامُ بِها فَترُ

    The wine of age is joined by wine;

    when it creeps through, the bones grow slack from it.

    Both ravage a person's reason from every side,

    so both bring you under the sway of senseless babble.
