إِذاif أَثنىhe praised عَليَّupon me المَرءُthe man يَوماًone day
بِخَيرٍfor goodness لَيسَis not فِيَّin me فَذاكَthen that man هاجِa lampooner
If a man should one day praise me
For goodness not in me, he is a lampooner.
وَحَقِيَّand by my right إِنif أَساءَhe did wrong بِماwith what إِفتَراهُhe fabricated it
فَلُؤمٌthen baseness مِنfrom غَريزَتِيَmy innate nature اِبتِهاجيmy delight
And, by my right, if he wrongs me with what he fabricates,
Then my delight is baseness arising from my nature.
