If a caller calls you to a matter's right course,

then answer, and do not fail to follow him.

    Himyar's rule changed, then Kisra's,

yet human nature refused to change.

I found people, on mountain and plain,

as though they were wolves or beasts of prey:

men like dogs fighting one another,

and women like hyenas in heat.

May God strip an emir of good fortune,

whose child is sold with his knowledge:

slave women, like she-camels, are driven away from him,

and in their wombs are calves of his.
