وَدِدتُ وَفاتِيَ في مَهمَهٍ

وَدِدتُ وَفاتِيَ في مَهمَهٍ

بِهِ لامِعٌ لَيسَ بِالمَعلَمِ

بِهِ لامِعٌ لَيسَ بِالمَعلَمِ

I wish my death to come in a trackless wilderness,

I yearned for my death in an important matter

where a gleam is no landmark.

With a shining sword, not a blunt one

أَموتُ بِهِ واحِداً مُفرَداً

أَموتُ بِهِ واحِداً مُفرَداً

وَأُدفَنُ في الأَرضِ لَم تُظلَمِ

وَأُدفَنُ في الأَرضِ لَم تُظلَمِ

I would die there, alone and solitary,

I die alone, solitary

and be buried in earth that has not been wronged.

And am buried in unoppressed earth

وَأَبعُدُ عَن قائِلٍ لا سَلِمتَ

وَأَبعُدُ عَن قائِلٍ لا سَلِمتَ

وَآخَرَ قالَ أَلا يا سَلَمي

وَآخَرَ قالَ أَلا يا سَلَمي

And keep far from one who says, 'May you not be safe!'

And am far from one saying "you are safe"

and another who says, 'Ah, may you be safe!'

And another saying "no oh my safety"

أُحاذِرُ أَن تَجعَلوا مَضجَعي

أُحاذِرُ أَن تَجعَلوا مَضجَعي

إِلى كافِرٍ خانَ أَو مُسلِمِ

إِلى كافِرٍ خانَ أَو مُسلِمِ

I fear that you might set my resting place

I am wary of you making my grave

beside an unbeliever who betrayed, or a Muslim.

Next to a betraying disbeliever or Muslim

إِذا قالَ ضايَقَتني في المَحَلِّ

إِذا قالَ ضايَقَتني في المَحَلِّ

قُلتُ أَساؤوا وَلَم أَعلَمِ

قُلتُ أَساؤوا وَلَم أَعلَمِ

Should he say, 'You have crowded me in this place,'

If he says "it is tight for me in the grave"

I would say, 'They did wrong, and I did not know.'

I say "they did bad and I did not know"
