لَأَوصِيَنَّI shall surely counsel بِماconcerning what أَوصَتcounseled بِهِconcerning it أُمَمٌpeoples
فيthrough الدَهرِtime وَالقَولُand speech مِثلَlike الشُربِdrinking مَعلولُrepeated
I shall surely give the counsel that peoples gave
through the ages—and speech, like drinking, is repeated.
لاdo not تَأمَنَنَّever feel safe from أَخاone afflicted with داءٍillness وَلاnor ضَمَنٍchronic infirmity
قَدmay يُحدِثُinflict السَيفُthe sword كَلماًa wound وَهوَand it is مَفلولُnotched
Never feel safe from one afflicted with illness or chronic infirmity;
a sword may inflict a wound even when its edge is notched.
وَلاand do not يَغُرَّنكَdeceive you مِمَّنfrom someone قَلبُهُhis heart أَحِنٌrancorous
صَمتٌsilence فَإِنَّfor indeed حُسامَthe keen sword الغِمرِrancor مَسلولُunsheathed
And let no one whose heart bears rancor deceive you
by silence; for rancor’s keen sword is drawn.
وَإِنand if دُلِلتَyou are guided عَلىtoward شَرٍّevil لِتَأتِيَهُso that you may commit it
فَأَنتَthen you مِنهُthrough it عَلىtoward ماwhat ساءَis bad مَدلولُguided
And if you are guided toward evil, so as to commit it,
then through it you are guided toward what is bad.
مَفعولُthe effect خَيرِكَyour goodness فيamong الأَفعالِdeeds مُفتَقَدٌmissing
كَماjust as تَعَذَّرَcould not be found فيamong الأَسماءِnouns فَعلولُthe pattern faʿlūl
The effect of your goodness is missing among deeds,
just as the pattern faʿlūl is lacking among nouns.
وَلاand do not يَصُدَنّكَdeter you عَنfrom مَجدٍglory وَلاnor شَرِفٍhonor
تَبغيهِyou seek it أَنَّكَthat you are طَلقُcheerful الوَجهِthe face بُهلولُjovial
And do not be deterred from glory or honor
you seek, just because you are cheerful-faced and jovial.
وَلاand do not تُجِلَنَّrevere ماwhat الأَحلامُreason تَحظُرُهُforbids it
فَقَدfor indeed عَلِمتَyou know بِأَنَّthat الرِمسَthe grave مَحلولُopen
And do not revere what reason forbids,
for you know that the grave stands open.
وَقَدand may يَطِلُّspill without redress دِماءًblood غَيرَnot هَيِّنَةٍtrifling
دَمٌblood مِنَfrom الذارِعِthe long-armed one الزِنجِيِّthe Zanj man مَطلولُunavenged
And much blood, far from trifling, may be spilled without redress
because of unavenged blood from the long-armed Zanj man.
ذاكَthat الأَسيرُthe captive كَفاناspared us غُلُّهُhis shackles عَنَتاًhardship
فَلَيتَهُso, would that he آخِرَthe end of الأَيّامِdays مَغلولُfettered
That captive—his shackles have spared us hardship;
so would that he were fettered to the end of days.
