I seek refuge in my Lord from His wrath,

and from my soul’s negligence and its excess.

Kings submit, though they are exalted,

to whatever He wills, from behind their vanguards.

And His decrees run their course over

the great stars and their lesser ones.

Nor have the sages among men warded off

death through the wisdom of their Hippocrates.

But a decree comes that shows

you their fool as the equal of their Socrates.

So let no tight-fisted hand withhold

its carat from one who seeks a gift.
