أَعوذُI seek refuge بِاللَهِin God مِنfrom قَومٍa people إِذاwhen سَمِعواthey hear
أَعوذُ بِاللَهِ مِن قَومٍ إِذا سَمِعوا
خَيراًgood أَسَرّوهُthey conceal it أَوor شَرّاًevil أَذاعوهُthey spread it
خَيراً أَسَرّوهُ أَو شَرّاً أَذاعوهُ
I seek refuge in God from people who, when they hear
good news, conceal it, but spread bad news.
ماwhat حُمَّwas decreed كانَcame to pass وَلَمand did not تَدفَعهُavert it مَشفَقَةٌconcern
ما حُمَّ كانَ وَلَم تَدفَعهُ مَشفَقَةٌ
وَيَفعَلُand carries out الأَمرَthe matter فيin الدُنِّياthe world مُطاعوهُthose obeyed in it
وَيَفعَلُ الأَمرَ في الدُنِّيا مُطاعوهُ
What is decreed comes to pass; concern cannot avert it,
and those who are obeyed wield power in this world.
إِنَّindeed النَجاشِيَّal-Najashi نالَattained المُلكَkingship عَنby قَدَرٍfate
إِنَّ النَجاشِيَّ نالَ المُلكَ عَن قَدَرٍ
بِرَغمِdespite ناسٍpeople لِبَعضِto some التَجرِmerchants باعوهُthey sold him
بِرَغمِ ناسٍ لِبَعضِ التَجرِ باعوهُ
Al-Najashi attained kingship by fate,
despite people who sold him to merchants.
وَخالِدُand Khalid بنُson of سِنانٍSinan لَيسَdoes not يَنقُصُهُdiminish him
وَخالِدُ بنُ سِنانٍ لَيسَ يَنقُصُهُ
مِنof قَدرِهِhis worth الكَونُbeing فيamong حَيٍّa people أَضاعوهُwho neglected him
مِن قَدرِهِ الكَونُ في حَيٍّ أَضاعوهُ
And Khalid ibn Sinan is not diminished
in worth because he lived among a people who neglected him.
ماwhy do I ليsee رَأَيتُcallers دُعاةَto error الغَيِّspeaking out ناطِقَةًspeaking
ما لي رَأَيتُ دُعاةَ الغَيِّ ناطِقَةً
وَالرُشدُwhile right guidance يَصمُتُfalls silent خَوفَfor fear of القَتلِkilling داعوهُits callers
وَالرُشدُ يَصمُتُ خَوفَ القَتلِ داعوهُ
Why do I see the callers to error speaking out,
while the callers to right guidance fall silent for fear of death?
لاlet them not يَفرَحَنَّrejoice بِمَولودٍat a newborn ذَوُوpeople of شَرفٍrank
لا يَفرَحَنَّ بِمَولودٍ ذَوُو شَرفٍ
فَإِنَّماfor indeed بُشَراءُannouncers of good news الطِفلِof the child ناعوهُare its mourners
فَإِنَّما بُشَراءُ الطِفلِ ناعوهُ
Let people of rank take no joy in a newborn,
for those who announce the child’s birth are also its mourners.
كَذَلِكَthus الدَهرُtime غَنّىsang مَنthose who يُصاحِبُهُkeep it company
كَذَلِكَ الدَهرُ غَنّى مَن يُصاحِبُهُ
وَلَمand did not يَعُدreturn بِسِوىwith anything but الخُسرانِloss ساعوهُthose who pursued it
وَلَم يَعُد بِسِوى الخُسرانِ ساعوهُ
So it is with time: it sang to those who kept it company,
yet those who pursued it returned with nothing but loss.
وَاللَهُand God حَقٌّis truth وَإِنeven if ماجَتsurged ظُنونُكُمُyour doubts
وَاللَهُ حَقٌّ وَإِن ماجَت ظُنونُكُمُ
وَإِنَّand indeed أَوجَبَthe most obligatory شَيءٍthing أَنis to تُراعوهُheed Him
وَإِنَّ أَوجَبَ شَيءٍ أَن تُراعوهُ
God is truth, though your doubts may surge,
and your foremost duty is to heed Him.
