أَراهُمI see them يَضحَكونَthey smile إِلَيَّat me غِشّاًdeceitfully
أَراهُم يَضحَكونَ إِلَيَّ غِشّاً
وَتَغشانيand beset me المَشاقِصُthe arrowheads وَالحِظاءُand the darts
وَتَغشاني المَشاقِصُ وَالحِظاءُ
I see them smiling at me deceitfully,
I see them smile at me deceitfully,
And arrowheads and darts beset me.
While fates and fortunes cheat and fool me too,
فَلَستُso I am not لَهُمto them وَإِنand even if قَرُبواthey draw near أَليفاًa companion
فَلَستُ لَهُم وَإِن قَرُبوا أَليفاً
كَماjust as لَمdid not تَأتَلِفjoin together ذالٌthe letter dhāl وَظاءُand the letter ẓāʾ
كَما لَم تَأتَلِف ذالٌ وَظاءُ
So I am no companion to them, even if they draw near,
Though they draw near, familiar and close by,
Just as dhāl and ẓāʾ have never joined.
I'm not to them a friend, as dhal and zha do not agree.
