I see the phoenix as too lofty to be hunted,
I see the proud she-camel disdain being hunted,
So oppose whoever you have the strength to oppose.
So resist whoever you can resist.

The days themselves refuse to yield the reins.
But it was the days that did not facilitate leading.

وَهَبْتُ له المَطِيّةَ والمَزَادا
As though, when I tossed him a waterskin-strap,
It was as if when I threw him a whip
I had given him the mount and the waterskins.
And granted him transportation and provision.

أفُلّ به اليَمانِيَةَ الحِدادا
And a worn-bodied mount, like a Yemeni steel blade,
The problem of my body is like the male ostrich,
With which I blunt the sharp Yemeni blades.
I sent away the female ostriches in mourning with it.
طَرَحْتُI tossed لهto him الوَضِينَthe plaited saddle-girth فخِلْتُso I thought أنيthat I

طرَحْتُ له الحَشِيّةَ والوِسادا
I tossed him the plaited saddle-girth, and thought that I
I relinquished to him the saddle cushions, so I thought
Had tossed him a mattress and a pillow.
I relinquished to him the mattress and pillows.
وَليand I have نَفْسٌa soul تَحُلّthat lodges بيَme on الرّوابيthe heights

وتأبَى أنْ تَحُلّ بيَ الوِهادا
And mine is a soul that lodges me on the heights,
And I have a soul that carries me to high places,
And refuses to lodge me in the hollows.
And refuses to carry me to low places.

It stretches out a hand to seize the sun and moon,
It extends its hand to grasp the two moons,
And carries provisions to outstrip the stars.
And carries so it can cast the star as provision.
