I see that death has crushed Ibn Abi Ishaq,

and the span of time has overtaken Abu Amr's soul.

They boasted of a pursuit they had made a source of gain,

yet it yielded them only paltry returns:

a cloak to wear, or a grant of just enough

to live on—not lavish gifts or abundant bounty.

And they accomplished nothing, but wrangled over

falsehoods that become like dead embers.

    فَمَن يَسعَ فيها لا يَخَف غَبَنَ القَمرِ

    So may God not let efforts in piety go to waste;

for whoever strives in it need not fear gambling's losses.

Did the Kufan not say it about asceticism, just as

the Basran sang of it in describing wine?
