وَقَدand yet شَرِبواthey drank كاساتِهِمtheir cups بِدُيونِon credit
I marvel at the people who avoided the cost of singing,
Yet drank their cups on credit.
وَأَفضَلُand better عِنديto me مِنthan أَكُفٍّhands تَداوَلَتpassed around
سُلافَةَchoice wine خَمّارٍof a wine seller أَكُفُّhands قُيونِof smiths
To me, better than hands that passed around
A wine seller’s finest wine are the hands of smiths.
يَقولونَthey say لَمnot نَشرَبwe drank مَقالَa claim تَكَذُّبٍof falsehood
وَقَدand indeed شَهِدَتit bore witness فيin أَوجُهٍfaces وَعُيونِand eyes
They say, “We did not drink”—a lying claim,
For the evidence shows in their faces and eyes.
