I lived on the simplest lawful sustenance,

and made myself like a shadow.

    Sometimes a person relies

    on a paralyzed limb.

O world, may God curse you—

    you mistress of coquetry!

My mind has not moved on from

you, even if it thought it had.

You have left of me only

the smallest part for close friends.

Yesterday you did away with part of me,

and tomorrow all of me will pass away.

My hours are yours, so leave

me alone when I rise to pray.

And leave me an hour within

you, for my most exalted Lord.

And youth is a kingdom; one may

weep over the kingdom that passes away.
