وَكانَand it was خَيالاًan illusion لاnot يَصِحُّholds true التَوَهُّمُthe supposition
I imagined goodness in time and its people;
But it was an illusion: the supposition does not hold.
فَماfor ... is not النورُlight نَوّارٌblossoms وَلاnor الفَجرُdawn جَدوَلٌa stream
وَلاnor الشَمسُthe sun دينارٌa gold dinar وَلاnor البَدرُthe full moon دِرهِمُa silver dirham
For light is no blossom, nor dawn a stream;
Nor is the sun a dinar, nor the full moon a dirham.
رَأَيتُكَI saw you لَمdid not تَحمَدpraise مِنَamong التُركِthe Turks مَعشَراًa company

I saw that you did not praise a company of Turks,
Who have a cloud that pours and drizzles desertion;

Nor the Kāsik, hoping in every darkness
For your red cup, while the horses are assailed.
وَقَدand sometimes يَأمُرُcommands اللَهُGod الكَهامَthe blunt sword إِذاwhen نَباit glances off

And God may command the blunt sword when it glances off,
So it cleaves; He may forbid the keen sword, so it grows blunt.

And surely no Indian-steel sword weeps over you,
Nor does a finely built steed display grief.

The pauper of his people equals the tribe’s king,
And the ravenous earth is scraped open for him, then swallows him.

And the buried man is unaware that his tale travels,
Reaching Najd and Tihāmah through the remotest lands.

Beside a sorrel mare, the bay-red wine flowed in his palm,
Into his mouth, until a black fetter was upon his leg.

Do you remember, O steed, battle and its heaps,
When arrows had made you seem a porcupine?

When spearheads were leveled at you, they were repelled
By horse armor shielding you, impenetrable to thrusts,

For a gray battle where the adversary conceals his words
And makes himself understood, though he does not understand.

When they draw near, blows are their handshakes;
And if they keep apart, their messages are arrows.
