I have spared others, but I do not spare my own soul.

I have feared it; whoever is allied with reason fears it.

And men who have always been ignorant deemed me ignorant.

For reluctant camels were roused by their companions grazing at dusk.

As for Iraq, upheavals have swept throughout its land,

like the Resurrection—its enveloping terrors have engulfed it.

And al-Sham fares better, except that its head

has been shattered, and the fires' seeker has approached them by night.

And the people clothe those they meet in mantles

whose stripes are blood and whose edges are unhemmed.

Cold mantles, which they take for vanished villages,

whose herds have passed across them and never returned.

The swords of India made you forget Hind, erasing

what her reprover said or her slanderer said.

And Time forever holds over its children

a jurisdiction whose verdict no briber can overturn.
