I have scorned—having already scorned necklaces—

a bracelet meant to make people call me adorned.

And how can I erect a building today,

when I know that tomorrow I shall depart?

Your scheming is a misstep, and time is a trickster,

bearing its people onward, its backbone unsteady.

We have settled in our dwellings, though we are travelers,

as if we were seated upon camel saddles.

Ignorance has made you think that you are in bliss,

though, if you reflect, you are in a wretched state.

If our antimony is mere dust,

who among people would wish to line his eyes?

And the world has granted us nothing

but consoling the soul with the impossible.

    فَما هُوَ غَيرُ دَعوى وَاِنتِحالِ

    And virtue has eluded every living being;

so each is nothing but claims and pretence.
