فَنَقدٌthen ready cash وَأَمّاand as for خَيرُهُits good فَوُعودُthen promises
I have learned Time’s ways: as for its evils,
they are ready cash; and as for its good, mere promises.
إِذاif كانَتِwas الدُنياthe world كَذاكَthus فَخَلِّهاthen leave it
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat كُلُّall الطالِعاتِthe rising stars سُعودُauspicious
If the world is thus, then leave it behind,
even if all the rising stars are auspicious.
رَقَدناwe slept وَلَمand did not نَملِكَpossess رُقاداًrepose عَنِaway from الأَذىharm
وَقامَتand it rose بِماwith what خِفناwe feared وَنَحنُwhile we قُعودُsitting
We slept, yet could not secure repose free from harm,
and it rose to bring about what we feared, while we sat still.
فَلاso let … not يَرهَبَنَّever fear المَوتَdeath مِنwhoever (reading مَنْ) ظِلِّremains (reading ظَلَّ) راكِباًmounted
فَإِنَّfor indeed اِنحِداراًa descent فيinto التُرابِthe dust صُعودُan ascent
So let whoever is still mounted never fear death,
for a descent into the dust is an ascent.
وَكَمand how often أَنذَرَتناwarned us بِالسُيولِof floods صَواعِقٌthunderbolts
وَكَمand how often خَبَّرَتناinformed us بِالغَمامِof clouds رُعودُthunderclaps
And how often thunderbolts have warned us of floods,
and how often thunderclaps have told us of clouds!
