أَفَدتُI gained بِهِجرانِby abstaining from المَطاعِمِfoods صِحَّةًhealth
فَماso there is no بِيَin me مِنany داءٍdisease يُخافُto be feared وَلاnor حِبنِdropsy
I gained health by abstaining from food,
so I have no dreaded disease, nor dropsy.
وَإِنand if أَلقَI encounter شَكويmy ailment أَلقَهُI encounter it تَحتَunder خِفيَةٍconcealment
كَجُزءٍlike a metrical foot بَسيطٍof the basīṭ metre أَوَّلٍfirst مُسَّwas affected بِالخَبنِby khabn (metrical elision)
And if I encounter my ailment, I find it concealed,
like the first foot of the basīṭ metre, touched by khabn.
وَأَصبَحتُand I became فيin الدُنياthis world غَبيناًdefrauded مُرَزَّأًstricken by loss
فَأَعقَيتُso I spared نَسليmy offspring مِنfrom أَذاةٍharm وَمِنand from غَبنِunfair treatment
And in this world I became defrauded and stricken by loss,
so I spared my offspring harm and unfair treatment.
فَلَستَso you do not تَرانيsee me حافِراًdigging مِثلَlike ضَبِّهاher spiny-tailed lizard
وَلاnor لِفِراخيfor my chicks مِثلَlike طائِرِهاher bird أَبنيI build
So you do not see me digging like her spiny-tailed lizard,
nor building for my chicks as her bird does.
فَإِنso if تَحكُميyou judge بِالجَورِwith injustice فِيَّconcerning me وَفيand concerning أَبيmy father
فَلَنthen will not تَحكُميهِyou decree it فيupon بَناتيmy daughters وَلاnor فيupon اِبنيmy son
So if you judge me and my father unjustly,
then you shall not pass that judgment on my daughters or my son.
وَأَوقَدتِand you kindled ليfor me نارَthe fire of الظَلامِdarkness فَلَمyet did not أَجِدI find
سَناكِyour radiance بِطَرفيwith my eye بَلbut rather سِنانَكِyour spearpoint فيin ضِبنيmy side
And you kindled for me the fire of darkness, yet I did not find
your radiance with my eye, but your spearpoint in my side.
وَماand not قامَserved as a substitute لَبَنُbeating الضَيفِthe guest إِذwhen جاءَhe came طارِقاًas a night visitor
بِماfor what هُوَhe راجٍhopes for فيin الصَباحِthe morning مِنَof اللَبنِmilk
And beating the guest when he came by night was no substitute
for the milk he hoped for in the morning.
