I fast throughout my life, and only

death breaks my fast, and on that day I celebrate a festival.

Two colors, from night and dawn, have dyed

my hair, and mighty Time has weakened me.

And people are like verses: their time speaks

through them—thus freeing one group and binding another.

They said, 'So-and-so is good to his friend.'

Let them not lie: no one among humankind is good.

For their ruler attained rulership through depravity,

and their pious man hunts for prey with his prayer.

    وَإِذا رُزِقتَ غِناً فَأَنتَ السَيِّدُ

    Be whoever you wish, of mixed or pure lineage;

and if you are granted wealth, then you are the master.

And be silent, for no man speaks at length

    without being thought an exaggerator.
