    I drank wine from my palm,

    though I had forsaken it.

    So, friend, the sober man was restrained

    by ignorance you can rid yourself of.

    And you are given it to drink for your worldly life,

    and that is the husband-hating harlot.

    رُوَيداً إِنَّها عارِك

    You hope for union with her;

    wait—she is menstruating.

    فَخَلِّ العِرسَ أَو شارِك

    She breaks faith with her first husband;

    so leave the wife, or share her.

    When will I be brought up with the caravan

    by this arak-grazing camel?

    Ah, the people have already gone,

    while my worn-out mount kneels, unable to rise.
