نادَيتُI called out to أَقضِيَةَdecrees اللَهِof God الَّتيwhich سَلَفَتhad passed
إِنَّindeed المَعالِيَlofty attainments بَذَّتَهاsurpassed them مَعاليهاtheir heights
I called out to God's decrees that had passed:
Indeed, their heights have surpassed all lofty attainments.
وَضَعتُI humbled نَفسيmy soul فَعاليهاso its uppermost part عَلىupon قَتَبٍa pack-saddle
مِنَof الغِنىself-sufficiency يُعرِفُmakes known الجَدوىbounty فَعاليهاmy actions toward it
I humbled my soul, so its highest part rests upon a pack-saddle
Of self-sufficiency; my actions toward it make bounty known.
نَوائِبُcalamities الدَهرِof time تَستَقريyou examine غَرائِزَهاtheir innate natures
حَتّىuntil تَرىyou see كَحَواليهاlike their adorned ones خَواليهاtheir unadorned ones
Time's calamities—you examine their innate natures,
Until you see their unadorned ones like their adorned ones.
أَمّاas for نِبالُarrows المَناياof death فَهيَthey are مُصمِيَةٌkilling outright
فَماso what are نِبالُarrows مَقالٍof speech لاnot أُباليهاI heed them
As for death's arrows, they kill outright;
What, then, are the arrows of speech? I do not heed them.
لاnot تَمنَعُprotects الغادَةَthe tender maiden الحَسناءَthe beautiful نِعمَتُهاher luxury
وَأَنand that تَقومَstand حَوالَيهاaround her حَواليهاher resourceful protectors
Her luxury does not shield the beautiful maiden,
Nor do her resourceful protectors standing around her.
وَماand not تُفيدُgain الغَوانيthe beautiful women مِنfrom لَآليهاtheir pearls
نَفَعاًbenefit إِذاwhen جاءَcomes كَيدٌtreachery مِنfrom لَياليهاtheir nights
Nor do beautiful women gain from their pearls
Any benefit when treachery comes from their nights.
وَلَمand did not تَجِدنيfind me طُغاةُtyrants الناسِamong humankind فيin طَمَعٍcovetousness
حَتّىuntil تَعيشَmay live أَواليهاtheir earliest ones أُواليهاI befriend them
Nor have the tyrants among men found me covetous;
Not till their earliest ones live again would I befriend them.
جَماعَةُthe group القَومِof people جَدَّتstrove earnestly فيin تَناظُرِهاtheir disputation
كَعانَةِlike a herd الوَحشِof wild asses جَدَّتstrove earnestly فيin تَغاليهاtheir competitive racing
The group of people strove earnestly in their disputation,
Like a herd of wild asses striving to outdistance one another.
حَقٌّa duty عَلىupon أَنفُسٍsouls مِنهُمamong them تَكالُؤُهاtheir mutual protection
فَقَدfor indeed يُخافُone may fear عَلَيهاfor them مِنbecause of تَكاليهاtheir mutual hostility
Souls among them owe one another protection,
For one may fear for them because of their mutual hostility.
بَطنُthe belly البَسيطَةِof the earth أَعفىmore peaceful مِنthan ظَواهِرِهاits outer surfaces
فَوَسِّعاso make room, you two لِيَfor me أَهرُبI may flee مِنfrom سَعاليهاits she-ghouls
Earth's belly is more peaceful than its outer surfaces;
So make room for me, you two, that I may flee its she-ghouls.
وَماand not تَزالُceases to be دَواليهاits waterwheels نَوائِبَهاits calamities
فَمِنso from شِدادِsevere خُطوبٍafflictions أَوor دَواليهاtheir gentler ones
And its waterwheels never cease to be its calamities,
Whether grievous afflictions or their gentler ones.
وَقَدand indeed أَطَلتُI prolonged وِصاليهاmy union with it عَلىdespite سُخُطٍresentment
مِنّيon my part يَسِيّانِare alike غَرقاهاits drowned وَصاليهاand its scorched
And I have prolonged my union with it, despite resentment
On my part; its drowned and its scorched are alike.
وَماand not اِستَراحَfound rest لَعَمريby my life مِنamong سَوائِلِهاits seekers
إِذاwhen طَغىoverflowed مائُهاits water إِلّاexcept سَواليهاthose indifferent to it
And by my life, none of its seekers has found rest,
When its water overflows, except those indifferent to it.
