How can there be profit, when our Lord has sworn

By Time that man is an ally of loss?

The days share out those over whom they pass,

From among their people, as gamblers divide their shares.

They are seven, like the gambling arrows, all winners,

    Equal in wealth and prosperity.

Alike: never have they demanded from a man

A breath for which he sought delay by pleading insolvency.

And it is a wonder that I am captive among them,

Hoping that death will loosen my bonds.

And death takes lives at every hour, coming early,

Or at noon, or in the evening, or traveling by night.

And from all six directions—not merely coming

Now from my right, now from my left.

The Asadī does not boast after his death

Of a battlefield’s vultures, nor of Nisār.
