Houses: one is seen demolished, another torn down
By breakage; and a line of poetry has a break.

Calamities: some come at evening, another at dawn;
And two conditions among humankind: hardship or ease.
وَإِنَّand indeed رِجالاًmen كانَwas نَسرٌNasr لَدَيهِمُamong them
إِلهاًa god عَلَيهُمover them قَبلَناbefore us طَلَعَrose النَسرُthe Vulture
And indeed there were men for whom Nasr was
A god; the Vulture rose over them before our time.
وَعاشواand they lived يَرَونَthey considered اليُسرَease إِفضالَthe generosity of مُكثِرٍa wealthy man

And they lived, seeing ease as a wealthy man's generosity
Toward a poor man; then the people and ease passed away.
لَهُمthey had سُنَّةٌa custom أَنthat لاnot يُضَيَّعَbe neglected مُعدِمٌa destitute person

Their custom was that no destitute person be neglected
When captivity brought a year's stars low.

And profit from this world is beyond a merchant's reach
Under any condition; rather, all its dealings are loss.

Life is like a bridge between two deaths, a first
And a second; the loss of a person is the crossing of the bridge.
