Has the dweller in the land of Egypt not known

the flash of lightning and the rumble of thunder?

And many a cloud has arisen, then vanished,

while the soil of our dwelling is not moist.

If a young man is granted good fortune in a drought,

he feeds as he pleases on soft, tender dates.

Quraysh did not gain its caliphate,

nor was its Sa‘d humbled, except through good fortune.

For this world has a road

along which pass those before me and after me.

    وَهَل يُرجى لَها إِنجازُ وَعدِ

    When it promises you good, it puts it off;

can it be hoped to fulfill a promise?

So pass your life amid clarity and murk,

and leave your two sorrows over Hind and Da‘d.

And do not sit with people of base conduct,

for the dispositions of fools are contagious.
