Had they followed me—alas for them!—I would have guided them

to the truth, or to a path close to it.

For I have lived until it wearied of me, and I of it—

my time—and the eyes of experience confided in me.

When my hour comes, the straightened spear will pierce me,

with no helper, and the Indian-forged sword will strike me.

And we ride upon a mount—the dusty earth—

tamed, yet never yielding to a camel-thief's hand.

So who can find me a spacious land where none dwells

but me, resembling the metrical circle of Mutaqarib?

So a man has nothing but seclusion and solitude

when he is not granted the fulfillment of his desires.

So wage war and make peace if you wish, for

the man of peace, as days pass, is just like a warrior.
