    Give alms to the birds setting out in the morning—a drink

    Of water, and deem them more deserving than humankind.

    For their kind inflicts no injury upon you

    In any circumstance, if you fear that other kind.

    فَعِشنا وَعُدنا راجِعينَ إِلى القِنسِ

    An eternal power has indeed brought us forth as branches;

    So we lived and went back, returning to the root.

    The days remind us of a matter, and we dwell

    Upon it for a time; then they must make us forget.

    So do not station yourself along your path, gazing

    At Christian women setting out in the morning for the churches.
