Forgive, and tell the young man openly what you mean,

and let them not say, “He is a backbiter.”

If Time makes us doubt through its deeds,

then all of us are distrustful of Time.

So pardon it and do not reproach it—for many

an ʿAwf and many an ʿAttāb have perished through it.

If the wayward were struck with the sword, not

with the whip, as punishment for drinking wine, they would not repent.

That one for whom a form has been fashioned—

he is thus clad in God's wrath.

We slept upon gray hair—did there visit us

a returning phantom of youth's beginnings?

Far from it! It is not borne toward us by

    horse saddles or camel pack-saddles.
