Fie upon the hardship we are in!

For all of us are steeped in scheming and deceit.

What are grammar, poetry, and theology—and what

are Muraqqish and al-Musayyab ibn ʿAlas?

The sleepless man's dark night drags on,

and dawn is far—who will bring us food?

Those wrapped in shawls are like wolves, even if

they meet you in white, while wolves are dusky.

    فَإِن أَتَتني حَلاوَةٌ فَبَلَس

    Lentils prepared for me suffice me;

and if something sweet comes my way, then figs.

So eat what you choose: more restful than

Qarun's riches are self-restraint and poverty.

A young man draws near you for his own need,

until, once he gains what he wanted, he slips away.

And a chain in the ear brings no

adornment; yet how often a chain has graced both hands.

Do not be a burden on your companion in the

gathering: many an eater took seconds and regurgitated.

If you are treacherous, keep well away; nor

is one who wrongs and betrays hidden from people.

And if you are granted reason, you are, to the

companions, a jewel vied for in furtive snatches.

    فَما يُبالي الكَريمُ أَينَ جَلَس

    And sit wherever you come to rest, unhurriedly;

for a noble man does not care where he sits.
