    Fear has appeared, and he fears calamities—

    an old man beset by troubles morning and night.

    Glory to our Creator! A dust-gray bed

    lies beneath us, and has a blue covering.

    And the bright stars swim in the sea of heaven,

    floating before gazing eyes, and sinking.

    You made your horses sweat in pursuit of wealth,

    yet another gained it, bound for Syria or Iraq.

    جَمَعَ التَجارُبَ عُمرُهُ المُتَفَرِّقُ

    And the man of reason is bewildered in his affairs;

    his scattered years have gathered experience.

    فَمَضى وَشيكاً وَاِستَقَرَّ الأَبرَقُ

    And Ibn al-‘Abd revisited Burqat Thahmad;

    he soon passed away, while the stony tract remained.

    Exalted is He who spared inanimate things: you never see

    a stone choking on food or on drink.

    Naked in its summer and its winter,

    it has never feared a garment wearing through.

    Showing fortitude—or I thought it merely inert—

    no tear trembles in it at a grievous calamity.

    No sensation pains it into showing distress,

    if a mallet or hammer begins striking it.

    It never set out at dawn like a bird seeking its living,

    met, while pecking, by a falcon or a hawk.

    O Death, why do you ride doves,

    ash-gray, when the gray camel is among the worst mounts?

    And rock abides, never once committing

    a sin, nor does it bow its head in shame.

    وَبَنوهُ كُلُّهُمُ سَفيهٌ أَخرَقُ

    And Time is inept, never finding its way to a kindness;

    and its sons are all foolish and inept.

    And our bodies are alike, but divergent

    are our aims: one heads west, another east.

    وَالغُصنُ يورِقُ في الزَمانِ وَيورَقُ

    O aged man, alas for you! Calamities have changed you;

    and in time the branch puts forth leaves and is stripped bare.

    Sins have filled your page, and your conduct is

    jet-black ink, while the hair at your temple is parchment.

    And it is as though ashes were shaken, in sorrow,

    over your brow, while your heart burns.

    إِنَّ الحَياةَ مِنَ الأَنامِ لِتُسرَقُ

    The thief of slumber is the angel of death, they claim;

    life is indeed stolen from humankind.

    Whoever is given something is robbed of it; whoever sleeps

    beneath darkness's wing will surely be kept awake.

    The crow is driven off in superstitious dread; its opposite

    is the household's white, split-combed rooster.

    This is folly, as though we were a herd of saltwort-grazing camels,

    or an ostrich flock on a barren plain, fed by ‘ishriq.
