Fear God, and beware lest an ascetic deceive you

by the change in his condition.

For people's souls are nothing but followers

of a speaker of lies, extravagant in his absurd claims.

So this man, in his fasting and prayer,

is like that man, in his staying and journeying.

    فَما دينُهُ إِلّا ضَعيفُ اِنتِحالِهِ

    So disbelieve a leader who says, 'I am indeed devout';

for his religion is merely a feeble claim he makes.

He schemes in this treacherous world, yet all

he hopes for through his absurd claims is a fleeting pittance.

And whoever lines his eyes with sleeplessness in pursuit of eminence

may see its path through the kohl he applies.
