لَئِنeven if سَقَتكَgave you to drink اللَياليthe nights مَرَّةًonce ضَرَباًhoney
فَكَمand how often سَقَتكَgave you to drink عَلىover مَرِّthe passing of الزَمانِtime مَقِرbitter aloes
Even if the nights once gave you honey to drink,
How often, through the passing years, they gave you bitter aloes!
إِنَّindeed المَشَقَّرَal-Mushaqqar لَمdid not تُخلِدmake everlasting مَمالِكَهُits kingdoms
شُقرٌchestnut horses تُقادُare led وَلاnor مَسحوبَةٌtrailing robes كَشَقِرlike Shaqir
Indeed, al-Mushaqqar's realms were not made everlasting
By chestnut steeds led forth, nor by trailing robes like Shaqir.
وَإِنَّماand only هَذِهِthis الدُنِّياworld لَناfor us تَلَفٌruin
إِذاwhen الفَقيرُthe poor man تَصَدّىsets his sights لِليَسارِon wealth فَقِرbecomes destitute
And this world is nothing but ruin for us:
When the poor man seeks wealth, he is left destitute.
فَأَذرِso shed دَمعَكَyour tears إِنif جُهّالُهاits ignorant ones اِبتَسَمواsmile
مِنout of جَهلِهِمtheir ignorance وَإِذاand when خَفَّgrows frivolous الأَنامُhumankind فِقرthen be grave
So shed your tears if its fools smile
Out of their ignorance; and when people grow frivolous, be grave.
وَاِهرُبand flee مِنَfrom الناسِpeople ماthere is no فيin قُربَهُمtheir proximity شَرَفٌhonor

إِنَّindeed الفَنيقَthe pampered camel إِذاwhen دانىdraws near to الأَنيسَhumankind عُقِرis hamstrung
And flee from people: there is no honor in their company.
For the pampered camel, when it approaches people, is hamstrung.
وَالصَقرُand the falcon يَلبَسُputs on إِنif طالَgrows long المَدىthe span of time هَرَماًold age
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen مَرَّpasses بَينَamong الهاتِفاتِthe calling birds تَفِرbecomes contemptible
And the falcon dons old age if its years grow long,
Until, when it passes among the calling birds, it is despised.
لَوif عاشَتِlived الشَمسُthe sun فيناamong us أُلبِسَتwould be clothed ظُلَماًin darkness

Were the sun to live among us, it would be clothed in darkness;
Or were the full moon to seek a favor from us, it would be scorned.

You bore, O mother, a child who grew up in hardship;
If only your flank had been slit open around that fetus,
لِتَستَريحاso you both might rest فَكَمfor how often عانىhe endured أَذىthe pain of قَرَسٍbiting cold

So that you both might rest—for how often he endured the pain of biting cold
In winter, and faced fierce heat and was scorched.
فَلاso do not تُقِرُّacknowledge بِمَجدٍglory لِاِمرِئٍfor anyone أَبَداًever
إِنif كُنتَyou are بِاللَهِin God رَبَّLord of النَيّراتِthe heavenly lights تُقِرّyou acknowledge
So never acknowledge glory in anyone,
If you acknowledge God, Lord of the heavenly lights.
