أَتَرغَبُdo you desire فيfor الصيتِfame بَينَamong الأَنامِhumankind
أَتَرغَبُ في الصيتِ بَينَ الأَنامِ
وَكَمand how many خَمَلَfell into obscurity النابِهُthe eminent man الصَيِّتُthe renowned
وَكَم خَمَلَ النابِهُ الصَيِّتُ
Do you desire fame among humankind?
And many an eminent, renowned man has sunk into obscurity.
وَحَسبُand sufficient for الفَتىa young man أَنَّهُthat he مائِتٌwill die
وَحَسبُ الفَتى أَنَّهُ مائِتٌ
وَهَلand does يَعرِفُknow الشَرَفَhonor المَيِّتُthe dead man
وَهَل يَعرِفُ الشَرَفَ المَيِّتُ
And it is enough for a man that he must die;
And does the dead man know honor?
