لاdo not تَبدَأَونيbe the first to confront me بِالعَداوَةِwith hostility مِنكُمُfrom you
فَمَسيحُكُمfor your Christ عِنديin my view نَظيرُthe equal of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
Do not be the first to show me hostility,
Do not begin with enmity towards me
For your Christ, to me, is the equal of Muhammad.
For your Christ to me is like my Muhammad
أَيَعيثُdoes it harm? ضَوءُthe light of الصُبحِdawn ناظِرَthe eye of مُدلِجٍa night traveler
أَمor نَحنُwe أَجمَعُall فيin ظَلامٍdarkness سَرمَدِeverlasting
Does dawn's light harm a night traveler's eye,
Does the morning light squint at a late riser
Or are we all in everlasting darkness—
Or are we altogether in eternal darkness
كُمهُblind from birth البَصائِرِfaculties of insight لاnot يَبينُbecomes clear لَهاto them الهُدىguidance
أَوor مُبصِرٌone who sees أَبَداًalways بِعَينَيthrough the two eyes of أَرمَدِsomeone with inflamed eyes
Blind in inner vision, to which guidance is not clear,
The blind whose insights cannot find guidance
Or always seeing through a pair of sore eyes?
Or a seer forever with bleary eyes
جَسَدٌa body يُعَذَّبُis tormented فيin الحَياةِlife حَسِبتُهُI thought it
مُستَشعِراًinwardly feeling حَسَدَenvy of العِظَامِthe bones الهُمَّدِlifeless
A body tormented in life—I thought it
A body tortured in life I thought
Harbored envy of the lifeless bones.
Feeling the envy of moldering bones
إِنَّindeed السُيوفَswords تُراحُare given rest فيin أَغمادِهاtheir sheaths
وَتَظَلُّand they remain فيin تَعَبٍweariness إِذاwhen لَمnot تُغمَدِare sheathed
Indeed, swords are given rest in their sheaths,
Swords may rest in their sheaths
And remain weary when they are not sheathed.
And remain weary when undrawn
مَنwho ليfor me بِجِسمٍwith a body لاnot يُحِسُّfeels رَزِيَّةًa calamity
لَكِنbut يُعَدُّis reckoned كَتُربَةٍlike soil أَوor جَلمَدِsolid rock
Who will give me a body that feels no affliction,
Who will lend me a body that feels no misery
But is reckoned as earth or solid rock?
But rather counts as dust or permafrost
رَوحٌa soul إِذاwhen اِتَّصَلَتit becomes joined بِشَخصٍto a person لَمnot يَزَلceases
هُوَhe وَهيَand it فيin مَرَضِthe sickness of العَناءِtoil المُكمِدِgrief-inducing
When a soul is joined to a person, forever
A spirit once joined to a person remained
He and it remain in the sickness of grief-inducing toil.
Both it and he in the grip of lingering illness
إِنif كُنتِyou are مِنof ريحٍwind فَياthen O ريحُwind اِسكُنيbe still

If you are of wind, then, O wind, be still;
If you are a wind, o wind, lay still
Or if you are of flame, then, O flame, go out.
Or if you are a flame, o flame, die down
