المَوتُdeath نَومٌsleep طَويلٌlong لاno هُبوبَawakening لَهُfor it
وَالنَومُand sleep مَوتٌdeath قَصيرٌbrief بَعثُهُits resurrection أَمَمُnear at hand
Death is a long sleep from which there is no awakening.
And sleep is a brief death, its resurrection near at hand.
وَفيand in الخُمولِobscurity حِمامٌdeath وَالفَتىand the youth قَبَلٌpresent and alive
وَفيand in النَباهَةِrenown عَيشٌlife وَالفَتىand the youth رِمَمُdecayed bones
And in obscurity is death, though the youth is still alive;
and in renown is life, though the youth is crumbling bones.

Forms differ: white-footed ibex bear on their skulls
their horns, while ostriches have no locks of hair.

And a snake hears sounds; 'unjust' is
among its epithets, while a male ostrich is by nature deaf.
لاlet not يَخدَعَنَّكَdeceive you أُخراناour later generations كَأَوَّلِناlike our first
فيin نَحوِthe like of ماwhat نَحنُwe فيهِin it كانَتِwere الأُمَمُthe nations
Let not our later generations deceive you: they are like our first.
The nations were in much the same state as we are,
مُقَلَّدينَcollared بِذَمٍّwith blame لاnot يُضَيِّعُهُloses it
مِنهُمamong them عَريبٌa single person وَلَكِنbut ضاعَتِwere lost الذِمَمُpledges of honor
with blame hung about their necks, never lost
by a single one of them; yet pledges of honor have been lost.
أَجيدَwas it watered? قَلبُكَyour heart لَمّاwhen جادَهُمdrenched them مَطَرٌrain

Was your heart watered when rain drenched them,
or did your sorrow overflow when aspirations ebbed away?

ماwhat لاnot يَدومُlasts فَماso not يَبقىremains لَهاfor them الشَمَمُloftiness
Let not the high-bridged noses rise in pride—those granted
what does not endure, for their loftiness will not remain.

Were it not for marvels showing that our Creator
knows better and is wiser, we would have called our creation a touch of madness.
