مِنَ المَحلِ جادَت بَني سَلسِلَه
Chains of lightning necklace the land;
Chains of lightning lift the lands
impossible that they should pour their rain on Banū Silsilah.
from drought; they drenched Banū Salsilah.

They water one homeland and pass all others by,
They watered one land and passed the rest by,
sent forth laden with life-giving rain.
laden with life-giving rain, sent forth.
أَتَغسِلُdo you wash? جِسمِيَmy body مِمّاof what بِهِis on it
أَتَغسِلُ جِسمِيَ مِمّا بِهِ
وَقَلبِيَwhile my heart أَحوَجُin greater need أَنthat تَغسِلَهyou wash it
وَقَلبِيَ أَحوَجُ أَن تَغسِلَه
Will it wash my body clean of what is upon it,
Do you wash my body of what is on it,
when my heart is in greater need of being washed?
while my heart has greater need for you to wash it?

Never, all my life, shall I drink a draught of wine,
Nor shall I ever drink lawful drink,
while my soul lies forfeit to its deeds.
while my soul is held in pledge for its deeds.
