Can the two youths—day and night—ever be safe from calamity,

When fate gives warning upon warning?

Of the two, the likelier to be met one morning with death within a span

Is this day; so be people of sound judgment.

It is the new one, yet time folds it away, worn out,

And time brings back darkness after darkness.

    فَلَم تَزَل ذاتَ أَولادٍ وَأَخلامِ

    Your world does no good in the friendship it offers;

For it has always had children and intimates.

It is enough to make life a mote in the eye that it is reckoned harm,

And that it is spent in sicknesses and pains.

And my poverty does not hurl me into my calamities,

Nor does my Islam deliver me from them.

And people, amid engulfing troubles, have set their thoughts to work,

Like a herd grazing among saltbush and saltwort.

And they never leave bare of guile or stratagems

The points of tawny spears or the points of pens.

A close friend has baffled you; but for a power that went before,

It would not have been possible to join khāʾ and lām.

So let no deceitful woman ever beguile you,

One of the beauties, by a hint or through a smooth talker.

The boy keeps far away—even if his father disapproves—

    From needing jewelry and henna.

So refer your affairs, in whatever you undertake,

To one pure of defilement, deeply learned.
